Will Traditional Cartoon Principles Survive?

I was worried classic cartoon techniques - and the great studio cartoons of the 30s to the 50s themselves would soon die out and be forgotten. Certainly if all you could ever see were the modern cartoons on TV and even the feature films it would be a guarantee that our glorious past could never come back - and that would be profoundly depressing.

I'm encouraged lately by how many young cartoonists are doing my own exercises and getting really good at it, and that they are embracing actual practical skills and appreciating the beautifully drawn cartoons of the golden age of animation. It seems positively rebellious to me, considering the recent past of shoddy popular animation - and how many people who stood up for it.

PETE EMSLIE - A TEACHER WHO TEACHES CLASSIC PRINCIPLES

I've met a few Sheridan college students who praise teacher Pete Emslie because he not only explains classic cartoon drawing principles, but will actually sit down and show you by drawing over your drawings and demonstrating how to do them with an intelligent procedure.

As far as I know, this is very rare for animation schools. When I went to Sheridan, the teachers all praised Disney tradition but none of the teachers could show you how to do any of it. They didn't actually draw anything in front of you - or if they did the odd time you'd see why it was such a rare occurrence.

Pete's students have all told me how much easier it is to learn from someone who will demonstrate the techniques themselves. I imagine you'd respect the teachings more too, knowing that the guy preaching good drawing can actually do it himself.

HOW TO CONSTRUCT A DRAWING - LIVE

Pete and I have our own separate tastes (and some that overlap) for which classic cartoons we like best; he probably prefers Disney and Jones to Clampett and Natwick, but we both believe in the principles of good cartoon drawing that all these artists share. He's also well known for his stylish caricatures and generously shares his techniques on his blog:
http://cartooncave.blogspot.com/2008/09/working-out-likeness.html

Whether you like Disney, Clampett, Avery, UPA, Spumco, Tartakovsky, Pixar or almost any other character animation styles - they are all derived from the principles and techniques developed and used by the classic animation cartoonists of the 1930s and 40s. If you know these techniques, you will have a much easier time adapting from one style to another or creating your own style. Good drawing in general is not a style; it's knowledge, understanding and skill. The better you can draw and analyze, the more creative choices and control you have personally. You won't be a slave to lack of ability.

Here are some of Pete's online tutorials:

and his blog:

Obviously the best and quickest way to learn to draw is to have good teachers like Pete who can give you personal instruction, demonstrations and critiques but not everyone is lucky enough to have this. I sure wasn't. When I started in the business I would have killed to have teachers actually show me how the cartoons I loved worked. Instead, I had to collect what little information existed about cartoons at the time, and tape old cartoons off the air and copy the drawings and try to figure out what was holding them together - with the help of the Preston Blair book.

Today there are still a handful of dedicated traditional teachers like Pete, but even if you don't have personal instruction from a skilled pro, there is a ton of useful information at the cartoon blogs.

Michael Sporn's Blog
Michael Sporn has a great blog that is just filled with articles, art and information on the most commercially oriented (which to some critics means crass and kitschy) yet artistically principled animation studio of all time.

You can learn a lot about classic cartoons by looking at, studying and copying the model sheets and "how to draw" articles on this site.

Here is Michael's article about the art of Disney animation and the book that inspired him and many others.

"I suspect that my receiving the book at such a young age made it all the more precious to me, and to this day it gives me positive feelings whenever I hit on certain pages and pictures in it. There’s a photo of Eyvind Earle holding up a cel of one of the three faeries that ALWAYS sends a chill up my back. It strikes to the heart of something I love about animation, and it inspires me like little else can. I can’t say what it is about this picture, but it speaks to me."

THE ART OF ANIMATION

Michael and I also share a love for animation by other classic cartoonists like Grim Natwick and Ub Iwerks and he has articles about them too:

CLASSIC CARS cartoons

Motoring in the early 20th Century was an exciting if dangerous pastime. No driving tests were introduced until 1935 and accidents were common. Hand signals were the norm; indicators had yet to be invented. The ubiquitous Ford Model T was first built in 1908 and by 1920 half of all the motor vehicles in the world were Model T’s. By 1927 production ceased after 19 years and 15 Million vehicles. Many elderly folk had never seen or travelled in a motor car before and the experience was a huge novelty, as in this cartoon by Henry M Brocks (1875-1960) depicts.

Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R) said Tuesday he does not support a GOP proposal to slash funding for Planned Parenthood, saying the cuts go too far.

Brown is the second GOP senator to oppose the measure, which House Republicans want to attach to a long-term spending bill.

"I support family planning and health services for women," Brown said in a statement. "Given our severe budget problems, I don't believe any area of the budget is completely immune from cuts. However, the proposal to eliminate all funding for family planning goes too far."

House Republicans have pushed for language cutting $300 million in federal aid and grants to Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions. The federal Hyde Amendment prohibits federal funding for abortion services, but anti-abortion rights activists and conservative lawmakers insist federal money that goes to Planned Parenthood for contraception and other reproductive health services could help indirectly fund abortions.

It is not clear from Brown's statement whether his opposition would lead him to vote against a spending bill that included the ban on Planned Parenthood funding. Brown voted in early March for the House Republican long-term continuing resolution that contained the cuts and did not specify how he would vote if it came up again.

"As we continue with our budget negotiations, I hope we can find a compromise that is reasonable and appropriate," he said.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has also said she opposes cutting off funding for Planned Parenthood. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) has voiced support for keeping funding for another family planning program.the hill (http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/151205-scott-brown-gops-planned-parenthood-cuts-go-too-far)

I think maybe if you're cutting 4 trillion from the budget, every single item would be effected. If we cut defense spending does that mean we want to be attacked?

Where do you think the Thunderbolt port might even go in the Air? Will it replace one of the USB ports? Doesn't seem like there's really that much room... thoughts?

The Thunderbolt port takes up no additional room. It replaces the miniDisplay port that is already on the machine.

I drive 5000+ miles worth of road trips each year. AT&T 3G is available for maybe 5-10% of that, and EDGE is mostly useless otherwise. I use Navigon and it works great. A GPS program that relies on live downloads would be a comlete disaster for me.

4S. I like the name, and it makes sense to keep continuity with the previous naming scheme (3GS). I guess we'll see a true iPhone 5 next summer.

Agree... The 's' is for any thing that you want...

[QUOTE=HobeSoundDarryl;12235279]"Now with airplay" seems too far down the benefit list to drive many sales of TVs. I doubt it would be touted in any mainstream way- just as another line item of something else the TV can do. I don't picture people choosing to buy new TVs because they come with that particular benefit.[QUOTE]

Apparently you don't understand just how many iOS devices apples has sold.

so a prius does the same amount of damage to a road as full size RV?

No, but a 70s compact muscle car might. (Friend had a 1970.5 Firebird that was getting him 6 mpg!)

Nothing anybody here can do really. http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userstats has no Astral_Cars either.
Maybe you should just wait until you've ended a WU or you've mistyped your username.

I think what the OP really means to talk about is discrimination, not racism.

yeah - to clarify, I mean racism in practice should be illegal. Holding racist views, however distasteful, should be legal as we should be free to hold our own opinions as long as we don't harm others by them.

It is the distinction between prejudice and discrimination.

I am not racist in mind or practice, for the record, and personally argue against anybody who is either!

I saw a story on the news recently where someone accepted a friendship request from someone they went to high school with and were friends with in high school. I guess they didn't know this person as well as they thought. They were actually being watched and monitored for the best times to break into their home. I know this an unusual circumstance but it definitely proves that you can't be too careful.

like I said...if you didnt read.. PEOPLE YOU KNOW AND SEE ON A NORMAL BASIS...not some friend from school 10 years ago..

Please you guys know who your REAL friends are...

for people like ME.. this feature is genius for finding my CLOSE friends and family.

When has Apple ever made anything more than "just a small improvement"?

iOS evolution from 1 to 4 is somewhat disappointing. It has become somewhat stale, especially for the iPad. Hopefully iOS 5 is a big leap forward.
